Homeowner's Guide: How to Verify Your Contractor's Credentials

This guide works for any California contractor — not just Sugar Bear. Use these steps before hiring a plumber, HVAC technician, or electrician to confirm they are properly licensed and insured.

Step 1: Look Up the Contractor's CSLB License

The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) maintains a public database of every licensed contractor in the state. Go to cslb.ca.gov, click “Check a License,” and enter the contractor's license number. The results show license status (active, expired, or revoked), classifications held, bond status, workers' compensation insurance, and any disciplinary actions.

If a contractor cannot provide a license number, or if the license comes back inactive or with unresolved complaints, that is a significant red flag. Every legitimate contractor should be able to give you their license number immediately.

Step 2: Understand License Classifications

California uses classification codes to indicate what type of work a contractor is licensed to perform. The most common for home services are:

C-10ElectricalWiring, panels, and electrical systems

A contractor performing plumbing work must hold a C-36 classification. If they only hold a general B license, they may not be qualified for specialty trade work. Always confirm the classification matches the type of job you are hiring for.

Step 3: Verify Insurance Coverage

A licensed contractor should carry both general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance. Ask the contractor for a certificate of insurance (COI). Then call the insurance company listed on the certificate to confirm the policy is active and has not lapsed. The CSLB lookup will show workers' comp status, but general liability must be verified separately.

If a contractor says they are “self-insured” or claims insurance is unnecessary for small jobs, proceed with extreme caution. An uninsured contractor working in your home exposes you to liability for injuries and property damage.
